This is a narrative fraught with secrecy, lies, deceptions, ambiguity, suppressed evidence, and more mischief than there are plural wives in Colorado City! A Latter-day Saint could be “proud” of such a rendition only if unaware of the several “loopholes” in the story line. This narrative does little to plug those holes.
The “official” narrative is whitewash. Expunged from the record are Joseph Smith’s repeated, vehement and invariable public denials of the practice of plural marriage. How does this square with the official narrative? Either Joseph Smith was lying or he told the truth.
Current Latter-day Saints are content to make Joseph Smith (Brigham Young, etc.) a “liar for the Lord”, condoning “secret” form of matrimony — in opposition to the Church’s own published scriptures and claimed practices — that is practically indistinguishable from adultery. Subsequent LDS “prophets” have proclaimed polygamy to be “essential” to salvation. Whether it be polygamy, priesthood or prophets, the definitions of “essential” gospel terms and tenets among the LDS faithful keep changing.
A “sandy” foundation to build upon, for sure.
